Karika 40

पूर्वोत्पन्नमसक्तं नियतं महदादिसूक्ष्मपर्यन्तम्।
संसरति निरुपभोगं भावैरधिवासितं लिङ्गम्॥ ४०॥

Translation by Henry Thomas Colebrooke (1837): (Subtile body), primæval, unconfined, material, composed of intellect, with other subtile principles, migrates, else unenjoying; invested with dispositions, mergent.
Translation by John Davies (1881): The subtle (body) liṅga, formed primevally, unconfined, permanent, composed of 'intellect' and the rest, down to the subtle elements, migrates, never enjoys, and is endowed with dispositions (bhāvās).
Translation by Ganganath Jha (1896): The mergent, subtle (astral) body, - formed primevally, unconfined, permanent, composed of Buddhi and the rest down to the primary elements, - migrates, is without enjoyment, and is invested with dispositions.
Translation by Nandalal Sinha (1915): The Liṅga or mergent Body, the one primordially produced, unconfined, continuant, composed of the Tattvas beginning with Mahat and ending with the Tanmâtras, transmigrates, free from Experience, tinged with the Bhâvas.
Translation by Har Dutt Sharma (1933): The subtle (body) Liṅga, formed primevally, unimpeded, permanent, composed of intellect and the rest down to the subtle elements, incapable of enjoyment, migrates and is endowed with dispositions.
Translation by Radhanath Phukan (1960): The Liṁga which is a mere collection of thoughts; which is the first thing or which was formed prior to all other things; which is not attached to any particular body (i.e., which can assume all the fourteen kinds of subtle bodies); which is eternal; which can penetrate into all subtle things from Mahattattva down-wards; which cannot enjoy - this Liṁga migrates.
Translation by Swami Virupakshananda (1995): The mergent subtle body, produced primordially, unconfined, constant, composed of the Tattvas beginning with Mahat and ending with tanmātras, transmigrates, free from experience, and tinged with dispositions.
Translation by G. Srinivasan (recent): Static mass states, as coherent and simultaneous, are created by maximally absorbing and super positioning the entire spectrum of vibratory or oscillatory states, from the largest and strongest to the (limit) finest, minutest kinetic charged states.
